Five more days left until my days off. Uggh. My hand hurts from writing. Just a couple more assessments left, and then MSW reviews. Where I, the newbie, help review assessments because they require an MSW signature. Maybe at some point I'll even be able review all of our policy stuff before DOJ arrives. I guess my answer to any question can just be "THE ASSESSMENTS ARE DONE ON UNIT 3" and then I'll twitch a little for good measure. :-)
After work today I hit a few balls to Dex and then chilled for a minute. I then attempted to take Dex out front to check the mail with me, but as soon as he saw neighbor kids running around, he took off. It was off the chain - he just ran around and did whatever he wanted while I yelled like a crazy person. Granted they were mostly kids he knows. He still didn't listen to a damn thing I said. At one point I had him pinned down and some almost teenager that we don't know said, "Well, this is awkward." And I wanted to be like, "No, this isn't awkward. This is training. And if you really want to be emo as your hair and your clothes suggest you do, then you need to go back in time because that was sooooo ten years ago." But I didn't because I'm an "adult." So after beating Dex (not really) in my backyard under the cover of my privacy fence, I let him back out to play in my neighbor's backyard with their dogs. My neighbor gave me LOTS of Thanksgiving food they brought back from her in-law's for me - fried turkey, mac n' cheese, butter beans, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, corn bread casserole, pasta salad, cranberry sauce, rolls, and a sampling of deserts. HOLY COW. And, AND, ANNNNNNND they brought me back fire wood (after I'd only asked where they knew of that I could buy it). I really do have good folks watching over me, and I'm so thankful! Joe and I want to get them a nice gift or something for Christmas. I'm going to try and get info out of one of the kids. :-) We sat outside together tonight and drank a beer while she grilled and their kids played with the dogs. Good times.
Afterward, I came home and ate some of the food (still more for tomorrow), and then cleaned the kitchen and got ready for bed. Tomorrow is a new day, and I need to go buy some Christmas cards so that I can get some of my employees to sign them for Holiday Cards for Heroes. I'm going to try to get some in the mail by Monday or Tuesday. Here's a site for more info. The cards need to get in the mail ASAP! Please consider it!! Son of a Nutcracker
Good movie night. And let's not forget when he flings himself into the Christmas tree to put the star on top after using the couch as a spring board. Ahhh, yes.
The past couple days have been good. I've been exhausted after work with all the organizing and working on long assessments that I'm HAND WRITING. I wrote an e-mail to the IT department today asking if we could have our computers updated to Windows 2007 so that we can actually open the new assessments needed for compliance with DOJ. Yes, they created a new assessment document and saved it in a format that cannot be opened on many campus computers. And THEN, when you can finally find a computer to open it, TWO OF THE FOUR UNITS I'VE BEEN WORKING ON HAVE BROKEN COPIERS, so I can never make mass copies. I have wasted so much time with piddly bullshit like that that I can hardly stand it. But. That's fine. Today I met with a couple folks and actually felt like a real social worker again. I work normally with someone who has an MA in counseling and CONSTANTLY regards herself as better than social workers. I am and MSW (Master of Social Work), and I've never understood this rivalry of counselors versus social workers. It makes me feel shitty and second guess myself, and today it felt GOOD to be away from that negativity and feel like I was helping someone again. One of the patients I worked with was admitted because he had actually tried to shoot himself in the head - pointed a shotgun at his head, pulled the trigger and everything. But something slipped and he shot through the bill of his hat instead. I put my finger through the hole today, just inches from his head. I hope that somehow in our long talk today I helped. Paperwork be damned.
Before I went to work I went to urgent care about my arm where after almost two hours of waiting, I talked to a doctor for less than five minutes who told me "It's either a boil or something bit you." Well holy shit, MD, that's the same thing I thought. BUT I DECIDED TO GO TO THE F'ING DOCTOR TO TRY TO NARROW IT DOWN A LITTLE. It was a train wreck. At one point just because I used the word "striation," she asked if was in the medical field. I was so stunned that just because I know a word longer than three letters, she asked me that, to which I mumbled something about being a social worker. Last, she told me to just "put some neosporin on it," and said she'd give me a script for five days of bactrim in case it doesn't go away. She then left the room, saying she'd be back with the script. But she didn't come back, and instead some nurse or maybe just a tech in scrubs came back to lead me out. I told her I had another question for the doctor with regard to MRSA and asked how this sore would have manifested itself differently if it were staff. She stared at me wide eyed, so I asked her if it would have just gotten bigger, faster, to which she answered a little too quickly "Yes, bigger, faster." Realizing, the doctor would be of no additional help, I left very, very angrily. I meant to find the OD at work today and have him look at it but forgot. If my arm explodes, someone's getting a beating with my nub. Yeah, folks, y'all want free health care? Be my guest because I can't believe the crap I (Joe) pay for (in Joe's sweat equity and pain).
This is all coming out bitchier than I had intended. I really had a decent day I guess. I did find my long lost fleece at work. Holy crap. Gone for months, I'd left it on the unit in the nurse's station. Woohoo. (I'm still washing the hell out of it as we speak.) Then, after work I came home to Sir Dexy. Whacked some tennis balls to him in the backyard in what was basically darkness. Then we did some rope pull tug of war in the house for a bit. Finally, I gave him a rawhide to work on and relaxed a bit myself. After a while, he came up and joined me on the couch. He does this thing where he pushes against me with his back legs, as if to scoot me over. WTF, right? And he groans when he does it. But this time he wouldn't stop. Finally, he came around and laid his head in my lap and passed out while I pet him. I swear I have a two year old human boy in this dog. But it makes me happy. I love him.
Mmm. Lobster. Ari?

Weird Day
As the Beatles once sang, "I think I'm gonna be sad. I think it's today. Yeah." That was sort of what happened to me today. A few things beyond my control got the better of me, but I'm feeling alright now. There are times when you cannot look at the big picture, but instead need to just go day by day. This is one of those times for me.
So anyway. I woke up this morning with this red mark on my wrist. Thought nothing of it - figured it was an infected hair or something. I guess it still could be. I left it alone until tonight and then went ahead and squeezed it to get it to start going away. Now it's angry. It's swollen, hurts a little, and I have a red striation running off from the circular part. The picture doesn't show it very well because the flash keeps bleaching the whole thing out, but I marked the end of the striation with a sharpie. I guess if it keeps extending, I'll have to get it checked out. I'm going to have the doctor at work look at it tomorrow. Anybody know anything about this?

I baked a pie for the post-work Thanksgiving shin dig tomorrow. Of course the pie I make for non-family folks looks like crud. The top crust gave me fits. I have never had so much trouble with pie crust before. Oh well. It totally looks repaired, but hopefully it tastes good.

I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow. I'll especially be thinking of Joe. Wherever he is, they aren't having any sort of Thanksgiving. No meal. Nothing. Think good thoughts for him, please, as well as all the other troops gone right now. I can imagine they'd rather be home for the holiday.

Thanksgiving. Awwww.
I can recall my Thanksgivings up to like four years ago. I do not know where I was in 2004, but I think I was in Missouri somewhere. In 2005, I know that I was down in Mississippi because Ari and I shared a room in part of my aunt's house that was being remodeled. I had bronchitis and also had to stay up one night to finish writing a paper. Additionally, that year marked the first time I called Joe, which I believe I've mentioned before - hopped up on Nyquil. In 2006, Joe and I spent the holiday together in Missouri between my dad's house and his mom's house. That was the last time I had a deep fried turkey (tear), and Molly bit a hole in the sleeve of Joe's favorite sweater at the time. He was pisssssed. That may have also been the year I had to hold Ari's head under the kitchen faucet after the turkey injector she was loading exploded in her face. Of course in 2007, Joe, Janiece, Alex and I had Bojangles chicken for Thanksgiving as we were in Ft. Jackson, SC for Joe's basic graduation. What a trip. Then last year Joe and I had a cozy Thanksgiving together. I cooked a turkey breast, prosciutto wrapped asparagus, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, gravy, something else I can't remember, rolls, and a pumpkin/cheesecake pie. It was good. This year I work, but I've still managed to come across some plans. A friend of mine is hosting myself and another girl - all three of us are without our men and apparently any other family around. I'm excited to spend it with them.
Speaking of plans finding me, I'm still not sure how I have any friends. I'm too good at isolating and not that great at actually calling and keeping up with others. At any given time I have about 10 people I either need to call or e-mail. And yet, people still kinda like me. I'm thankful for my friends. Truly. And I will try to be a better one.
It's been a good evening. Dex and I passed right out together on the couch earlier. I was exhausted from work - I was on the crisis unit today. I spent two hours working on one assessment with a patient that was rapidly cycling between mood swings. Euphoria to tears to anger to paranoia. Holy crap. So yeah, I was exhausted tonight. And Dex, well, he had a healthy dose of Benadryl. :-)

Sleep Anxiety
It used to be that I could pass out no matter what at night (or day for that matter). Studying for a test that I knew was going to kick my ass = pass out. Stressed about work the next day = pass out. Family issues = pass out. You get it. Well, one day last week I couldn't get to sleep. I had anxiety about some stuff and took a while to drift off. Ever since then when it gets around bedtime I get this fear that I won't be able to sleep. This totally blows. So now I'm in bed before ten, but I have those weird butterflies. Uggh.
Today was totally Monday. I got to work, sat at my desk, only to realize it was swarming with ants. The other social worker and I spent a good hour cleaning out the desk (which actually isn't all mine but instead primarily a third social worker's). We sprayed the office down with some cleaner and put in a work order for a bug man. No one ever came. So, I spent the day randomly smashing ants on my desk as they strolled across my phone, computer monitor, keyboard, and even my assessment paperwork while I was with a patient. I'm sure randomly slamming my hand down on my desk was especially therapeutic for my psychotic patients. Later in the day I got a phone call from my boss asking me if I wanted to work overtime this week (if he could swing it since I'm hourly). I was a bit stunned, as I'm already working the holiday through the weekend = depressing, and he wanted to know if I wanted to go over 40 hours. I didn't know what to say but the truth. I told him no. I don't. There's a mad scramble right now to get everything looking tip top, as surveyors from the Dept. of Justice are coming on Monday. Pressure's on, and it sucks. I want this week and the next to be OVER!
And so, the highlight of my day was coming home to little Dexter. We played ball in the backyard, took a walk, and then went to Pet Smart for dog food. He got a few new toys - a squeak ball and a big rope. Joe, I remember why we don't buy squeaky toys anymore. It was nonstop earlier. Oh, and Dex started limping again just a few minutes ago. WTF. Anyhow, here's for Joe: (He goes into doggy death shake at the end.)

He likes the new room. :-)

In daylight. And I have no idea why a ceiling fan was put in the dining room.

With curtains (that need adjusting).

The only way I can peacefully take a bath and not listen to Dex bark outside, in his cage, or running around the rest of the house.
Enjoy!

I've Got to Have a Shot
Of what you got - it's oh so sweet.
Speaking of lovin', I've decided that, after watching Mr. Schuester on Glee, Joe needs to wear a vest. What would be ideal is if on a date night, Joe dressed in a nice pair of his jeans, a dress shirt (with the long sleeves rolled up a bit as he always does), and a button-up suit (not a sweater) vest on over it. You know the hip, casual look. And he's got the V - baby boy has nice broad shoulders. He could totally pull it off, and he would look HOT. And I would take a sweater vest for myself. Every time I try to go damn shopping for myself, I get anxious and can't find anything. I really need a personal shopper. Damn it. Instead, I shall buy for Joe and look very undesirable myself. Woot.
Thank you for all the compliments on the paint job. And Joe, babe, what exquisite language you used. :-) I bought some curtains today and hung them. I hate dealing with curtain hardware, and I'm going to have Joe adjust it when he gets back. I think they look good in the room, though. However, I'm freaking out that the color is a little bold (oops, and I was supposed to stay neutral). Um. This may turn into me being unable to dress my house as well as myself. Crap.
So thoughts of the future. Someone asked me about my job today, and it was probably the first time that I really admitted to myself a strong dislike of it. Which then led me to think of other jobs I would rather do, which made me realize that I don't like to work and probably wouldn't even volunteer if I was unemployed again. Which led me to the only other way I will be productive as a stay at home Katie - I must make more of myself and mold them into decent human beings. I've been thinking lately of possible time frames in which to begin a family. I either need to try, with Joe's help of course, to get pregnant late this next summer and have a kid in 2011 or wait until Joe's out of the Army and we go wherever the hell we're going next. Which could turn into trying in late 2012 in order to have a kid by the time I'm 30. And dude, who knows if all our parts work. So yeah. Just thinking out loud. I should really talk to Joe about all this. :-) But let's talk less about scheduling now and more about - IS ANYONE REALLY EVER COMPLETELY READY FOR A CHILD?? Like, I start to think about everything, and I get a bit anxious. Because I'm selfish and I isolate and I don't really like talking to people all that much, but after there is a small Mulia around, I will be forced to give up my reclusive lifestyle. Shhhhit. I hear, though, that once the kid is born, you'll love it and forget (sorta) everything else. Right?
Also, what are everyone's gift ideas for this Christmas? I don't know what to buy anyone. (Have I written this before?) I hear sending gift cards is SILLY, but I think that's the best way to go when you have an entire family to buy for and mail stuff to. Last year I (we) spent well over $100 in shipping. I'm certain. So uh, what are y'all doin'? TELL ME.

The Roof is on Fire
Well, okay, the roof isn't on fire, but the shredder was. Apparently less than an hour after I left work yesterday, the big business sized shredder caught fire. Firefighters had to come and get the beast out of the building and everything. Of course, the fact that no windows can open for ventilation after the fact, and that the whole Admissions area still wreaks of smoke didn't cause concern from administration. I'm sure I took a little time off of my life breathing that air today. Hopefully it airs out some more before Monday. I think if I was pregnant, I would throw down. I mean, damn. It's just not right.
Still, work was alright, and I am soooo glad my weekend has started. Next week is going to blow, since I will be working Thanksgiving instead of going to Alabama. It's all in the name of having Christmas off, which may not matter anyway. Happy fucking holidays, right? Oh well. Still hoping everything turns out for the best. I've had some great offers for Christmas with friends and family if I'm to be alone in GA, but I work the day after Christmas. Why, God?? Whyyyyyyyy.
So Dex isn't limping anymore. That pretty much quit after like 2-3 days. Damn him. He's back to being fully nuts, and I really can't use the excuse for Benadryl anymore.
Holy crap I'm sleepy. Before I close, I saw on the news tonight where some emergency unemployment funding is about to expire. Takes me back to the grocery store the other day where I heard one employee ask the other if she was going to go ahead and go full-time (it was implied that there was an opening). And the employee responded, "I can't; it'll mess up my unemployment." DUDE.

24
It's been a full day, and I haven't pissed off anyone close to me. (That I know of.) Whoa, and right at that moment, Jay Leno asked, "How many of you are on Facebook?" Creepy. He's having a segment on Jay Walking about Facebook confessions about inappropriate pictures and comments. Oh snap.
Facebook aside, I can't help but wonder if I somehow pissed off my dental hygienist today. I guess I really don't think I did, but instead am assuming that she was just in a hurry to get out of there at the end of the day. As I lay there, having my teeth cleaned and polished, there were several things that crossed my mind, such as: "It hurts when you poke me in the gums repeatedly with that metal hook, which should be evidenced by my subtle flinches and the blood in my mouth." "I have never had anyone floss my teeth with such ferocity." "I taste blood." But hey, I was cavity free, didn't pay for shit, and got my free toothbrush and floss. I can't tell you the anxiety I have when I'm out of floss. It's right up there with when I get close to running out of milk. I ran out of toilet paper this morning and wasn't nearly as fazed. Of course, I bought more TP on the way home today. Just so you know.
I think I have the crying disease. As you all know, I cried yesterday. I also cried this morning when I found Dex chewing my childhood toy, Lambie - ripped all his legs off plus an ear. I pretty much cried uncontrollably after that. Like, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to stop before work. Bah. Of course tonight, I wept all through Biggest Loser, though that's pretty normal. I dunno. I don't want to blame everything on the BCP, but I remember the mood swings back when I first got on it. Back in college. Good Lord. We used to all go out and play baseball at a local field, and I ended up losing.my.shit one day. Like screaming at Bryan (which wasn't all that abnormal, but this was intensified). The Croat pretty much escorted me off the field, to the car, and then sat with me while I cried after we got home. I vowed then that I would never come off birth control until I was ready to have a child. But then of course I had to wait six weeks to see a damn doctor with Tricare Prime. Bastards. And here I am. Retarded with emotions and mourning the loss of Lambie, though Mom says she can sew him back together if I mail him to her. :-)
So many other things to share: The fact that I am now going to be working over Thanksgiving after all. The fact that Joe's vacation may be extended a month. The fact that the France trip we really wanted to take is kaput. The fact that while I was drinking wine earlier, I thought it'd be a good idea to buy a wii (though I didn't). Joe should have gotten that instead of his damn xbox 360, despite his delusions that there would be plenty of 360 games for us to "play together." Bullshit. But I'm damn tempted to buy a Wii for myself. Merry Christmas to me. I can do the fitness thing, mario kart, yoga. Hell yeah. But most likely I will talk myself out of it and do something sensible with the money. My student loans are about to dip under $25,000, and that's all the excitement this old lady can muster right now. Two more months, and we're talkin' teens. Ahhhh, feels so good to be 82 years old...
Good Lord. A Blanket Apology
To any and everyone that has ever been, is currently, or might one day be offended by anything I have ever said or will say, with special attention to those with whom I am friends on Facebook, I am very sorry. Today I was faced with yet another conflict stemming from something said on Facebook. I didn't even think the other person was serious, yet they really wanted me to apologize. So I did. Immediately following, I called Ari for help, and I think I managed about five minutes of conversation before I had to hang up and cry. This all came on the heels of other, actually important stuff that already had me in tears. With that, it was pretty easy to slip into violent sobs - the kind where you're unable to catch your breath and you consider, though briefly, looking for that old inhaler you stashed somewhere under the bathroom sink. Instead, I caught my breath on my own and headed for the stereo, playing a mixture of Eric Clapton ("Bell Bottom Blues" and "Promises") on repeat, The Beatles ("Something"), and Elton John ("Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" in which I sang every word and then various other songs as I fell asleep). Luckily, Dexter was still slightly sedated and allowed me to sing to him, lay with him, and thus nap with him for the next hour and a half. I then woke up, ate a piece of chicken and two Kit Kat bars for dinner before watching How I Met Your Mother. Yeah, who gives a shit. I'm about 1.5 to 2 more conflicts away from responding to internal stimuli, making claims that there are cameras throughout my house watching me, destroying my own home and belongings and needing a Haldol IM with an Ativan chaser once the police take me to the ER.
But anyway. Dexter was sedated in order to have x-rays (for that limp), which were clear. Also, there's nothing wrong with his paw; the doc is thinking it's either a muscle issue or a ligament/tendon deal with the leg itself. The muscle thing heals faster, while the other stuff takes weeks. Please God let it be muscular. We have five days worth of anti-inflammatory meds and instructions from the doc for Benadryl PRN. At any rate, Dex has to take it easy for a while, which is perhaps a sign that I need to take advantage and put my final coat of paint on the dining room walls.
Probably.

Too Much Time Alone?
He was so happy just yesterday...in this video. But now the poor pup is limping. Kinda bad it seems. I'm not sure what happened. We took a walk tonight, came home, ate, and then all the sudden he's holding one of his back paws up. I can't find anything in his paw. I'm hoping he just stepped on a pine cone or something and that it's sore. Please, no sprain. Gah. This dog has had more issues than ever before in Joe's absence (though thankfully nothing too serious - just annoying). He hurt a front paw a couple weeks ago and limped because of that. Prior to that, he ate a whole rawhide in one sitting, and his stomach started making explosive noises as he refused to eat (perhaps I blogged about that?)and thus was vetted. Then just last week, our neighbor's dog bit through his ear, which has now scabbed back together and is healing after much neosporin. Also, he has thrown up multiple times in the past few months, and just this morning I found where he'd pissed all over my painter's plastic in the dining room after being accident free for nearly a year. WHAT THE HELL?! I think it was defiance. He's so pitiful now with the limp, though, that I can't be mad. Hell, I even gave him an empty bowl from the corn at dinner to lick, and I NEVER give him any scraps or plates to lick.
Other than that, it's been a decent working weekend. Yesterday was pretty steady, but I felt good about things and got a lot done. Today was not as good, and at the end of the day, as is my norm, I was ready to sprint from the building. I don't know if the doctor knows I'm off at 4:00 on the weekends, but it was 4:30 (yesterday I stayed until 5ish), so I freaking jetted out of there without telling her I was leaving. Ah, can't wait until tomorrow.
I've been productive at home in the evenings. Laundry is done (minus bedding). I have filed and shredded papers. I cooked tonight and cleaned chicken breasts for future meals, and then gave the kitchen a much-needed cleaning. It's been good. Also, today after a reminder from my cousin, I looked up the rewards on our USAA credit card and found where we've earned $100 cash back so far (or various other gifts in lieu of cash). Holy crap!! YES. I was pumped. I think I'm going to route some of our bills through the credit card (since they'll be budgeted for monthly payments and be cleared from the balance immediately), so we can earn even more points. BOOYA.
Couple final things: Joey Walnuts, the man himself, is now a blog follower. Welcome, baby, and what a pleasant surprise. Second, here is a video from earlier tonight. Too much time alone, indeed.

"Just Look at This as A Learning Experience"
I don't know about everyone else, but whenever I'm told this, it's usually because things are in the shitter. My boss told me this today. I can't talk about why. But if I go to jail, tell the world my story...
In other news, I'd responded to the family member about the Christmas (no) gifting, and received an e-mail today from the spouse. So. I forwarded it Joe, and maybe he'll respond before I have to. I'm running out of strength.
Speaking of Joe, my love, I get these little e-mails from him where he never fails to tell me how much he loves and misses me. It's awesome. There are actually some interesting facts about Joey and me regarding the time leading up to the awesome couple we are now. I know you're dying for me to tell you more. Okay! Here you go: Joe and I both moved from pretty far away states, Utah and South Carolina respectively to Rolla, MO in the same month of the same year, August 1997. Apparently, we had marching band together that year and the next, though I have no real memory of him there even though remembers me. Aww. Over time in HS I gained an awareness of Joe, though he was very skinny (cross country runner) and had highlighted hair. Not my thing. And of course, Joe thought I was an angry bitch (I was). So we completed our high school careers without really ever talking to each other. I graduated in 2001 and Joe in 2002. Sometime around summer 2002 or 2003 (I think), I went back to Rolla and met up with some friends, along with Susan, at Applebee's. Joe and his friend Scott were sitting behind us, and DUDE, they were no longer the super skinny cross country freaks I'd seen just two years earlier. Instead, they were bulked up and looking good. I believe I told Susan how cute I thought Scott was. Mwa ha ha ha. At that time, I think there was probably some exchange of words with the boys, though no real conversation. And that was it until Christmas 2004 when Susan and I went to a Christmas party at Jeff Lentz's house. I sat in the middle of a couch with Susan on one side and a very drunk Jeff Lentz snuggled close at my other side. There was a love seat catty-cornered to the couch, which Susan sat closest to, and on that love seat was Mr. Joe. I remember him being dressed mostly in black, wearing Buddy Holly style framed glasses, talking about how he'd been living in France for the past semester and was only home for the holidays. I thought he looked like an EMO jackass, so I didn't bother to talk to him, but he and Susan carried on a pretty good conversation. (I was probably also bitter due to a bad break up that occurred right around that time.) Joe told me recently that he'd picked up on my feelings and didn't want to talk to me either. Ha. Fast forward to some time around late summer, early fall 2005, and there I was a college grad hunkered down on FB with my little sister checking out Joe's shirtless pics when he was ripped. As we giggled together, I wrote him a flirty little comment. That opened up a short lived dialogue on FB, which was strained when Joe dated one last chick before me for about a month in...October? By then I'd been done with other dudes for about a year - after that aforementioned bad 2004 break up, I'd vowed a year of singlehood, which I did successfully complete. Anyway. Around Thanksgiving 2005 we had our first phone call. I was tanked on Nyquil amidst bronchitis, and it was horribly awkward. Most of our phone calls for that next month felt incredibly weird/awkward, and I was pretty sure nothing could possibly come of it. Joe was very nonchalant, non-committal, and seemed only "sorta" interested. I remember going to his house with Kellen Rapier at some point in early Dec. 2005 after drinking wayyyy too much at a combined STL weekend of Philadelphia Eagles and Flyers. I was hung over and looked like shit. Awkward again. Yet we kept trying. Kinda. By Christmas day 2005, I sorta asked him what was going on. He said we had a good thing but that he wanted to take it slow. Cool. A couple days later he stood me up the first time we were really ever supposed to hang out, and I called him out on it, though minimally. He never did it again, and we hung out for the first time on Dec. 30th instead. We dated steadily and lived together intermittently for the next two years, and then married on Dec. 28, 2007. Woohoo!! Fate, baby. It all hit me a couple weeks ago that it took us the better part of a decade of being in the same place to actually get together and stay that way. I'm so glad we did. :-*

Dexy Loves Coney?
I was laying here in bed a few minutes ago, jacking around on Facebook, and I could hear Dex moving all around on the floor. It almost sounded like he was digging in the carpet on the other side of the bed. I finally sat up to see what the hell he was doing and found him laying on a tiny piece of his comforter on the floor at the foot of the bed. He'd pulled just enough of the comforter around from the floor on the side where Joe sleeps (that's why I couldn't see him) to the foot of the bed....where he was right in view of the TV....which Conan O'brien is currently on. My dog is badass. Just ask Ari - she watched Dexter perform his best howling over Skype tonight. Oh yes. We're not mentally ill at all.
Today was better than yesterday, and I believe I was more stable. Also, I got an e-mail from my dad saying he'd heard through my blog about the e-mail I'd tried to send him but that he's never gotten anything from me. Ah, and the irony of life kicks me in the ass again. I guess everything's okay then. Sort of. With that, it's on to the next family conflict. Ari and I both got an e-mail from a family member suggesting we not exchange gifts this Christmas under the prefix of saving money. Assuming, that this was something between all the kids, I went to confirm that the fourth sibling was in on this as well, only to be told that just my sister and I were part of the deal because they'd actually be seeing the other sibling at Christmas, and it's "just silly to exchange gift cards." Um. I gave them a gift card for Christmas last year, which I guess wasn't well-received. Also, I've never been excluded from gift giving because I don't live where the rest of the family lives. This is a new one on me. I feel like I've been kicked in the proverbial penis. However, this is also the person who said, "Katie, is it hard with Joe being gone for so long?" Now. I know I'm an idiot a lot of the time (just ask my dad), but I've always heard that the number one thing you don't ask a person with a deployed spouse is "Is it hard?" BECAUSE YES IT'S FUCKING HARD. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK IT'S LIKE?? So. I'm trying to just remind myself that "a cow can't be a horse."
Tomorrow I'm finally going to paint the wall color in dining room. It's laughable that I thought I could do trim and walls in one day. I had to paint two damn doorways, window trim, base boards, chair rail, and crown molding. Hell, I think it took me longer to tape than paint. The horror. It's on now, though. Trim looks bangin', and I went and bought my paint color today. Some sort of butternut something or other. Shit. I just remembered I was going to spackle one more part and prime it. Damn it, damn it. But, I at least remembered to start the dishwasher so I'll have a cereal bowl in the morning. All that my tiny brain could handle. So anyway. Yeah, wall color - make this house a happy home to share with Joey, Dex, and perhaps some other miscellaneous creature in a couple years.
That said, I have tomorrow off for Veteran's Day. To all the current and former soldiers out there, across all service branches and various generations, ranks, and MOS's, THANK YOU. Words cannot adequately describe what you all sacrifice. Freedom most definitely is not free, so again, thank you.

Angry High School Katie
In what I've determined to be the product of a fight with my father and getting back on birth control after about a month and a half off of it, Angry High School Katie has been back the last few days. Yes, that fight I first wrote about several weeks ago with my dad that was triggered by Facebook comments is still going on. After finally getting my thoughts together, I wrote him about a week ago and never got a response. I hate to admit it, but it's been eating me up, and since I had a quiet painting project at home over the weekend, I've had plenty of time to think and stew. However, today I had an epiphany. Of course since I'm older now, I handle things a bit better than I did in high school, but when it comes to my dad, I need to kick it old school. In high school I did try to initiate positive change between my father and me, to no avail. But what made my life better, more balanced and happier was when I went to college and got the hell away from dad. Of course, at present I am already away, and Georgia is plenty far. Now I just need to let it go, emotionally. As INXS once sang,
"I'm standing here on the ground
The sky above won't fall down
See no evil in all direction
Resolution of happiness
Things have been dark
For too long
Don't change for you
Don't change a thing for me"
With all this crazy emotional and hormonal shit going on, I'm glad I have little Dexter to keep me company. Tonight when I was still pretty upset, I was sitting on the couch and looked over at him. He was laying down but had his head up a bit looking at me, like "What are you doing now woman?" Something about just being damn glad that he was there made me start to cry, which meant he moved closer to nudge and play bite. Ha. After I quit crying, Dex stood up on the couch and did the doggy "sit" pose, but as he did (or struck it, rather), he just completely flopped against me. It felt so intentional, as if he was trying to cheer me up. His head was up above me on my head and his shoulders were against my face. I started to laugh then and couldn't stop, which Dex took at the signal for "play." He tried to mouth me and ended up biting my hair. It was pretty hilarious. Over the course of several minutes, he kept assing around, so much in fact that he fell ass first off the couch. I heart Dex and his (mostly) unconditional love.
PS. Is my background no longer showing up for anyone else? My computer can't or view it anymore even after a restart. Bye bye single fall tree. Also, I can't read "Life of Ty" anymore. No background on that blog and no words. Damn it.

Thank God for Susan
If she had not texted me to let me know Wanda Sykes' new show is on, I would have missed a brilliant skit regarding going green with one's dildos. Oh man. Awesome.
It's been a minute since I've written. Lots going on. I know we've all been thinking of Ft. Hood. I continue to pray for all involved. As I've said before, when something like this happens, it seems like the world should stop. But it doesn't. I guess we're meant to move forward (of course).
So as the world keeps rolling along, so does my life. Part of this last week was pretty hectic at work. One of the first times I actually felt like crying and walking out. It was just SOOO busy, and I didn't have any help. I made it, though. Even if I was delirious the next day. The week was sandwiched between two pretty good weekends. Last weekend I went to a Pure Romance party, and since I spent $100 (oops) I got a free toy. Serving booze was genius on my friend's part. I hung out on Halloween and went over to a friend's house for a movie and wine. On the way out of my neighborhood, I literally drove a "creep" due to all the kids out. If I'm home next year, I'm really gonna have to stock up. Jesus. This weekend has been spent being all sorts of productive. Yesterday I friggin' dusted, vacuumed, mopped, laundered all by noon. Insane. Today, I painted a ceiling and prepped the walls for color tomorrow...after I paint the damn trim. I am determined to actually "move in" to this house. It's our home, damn it!!!
Huh. It seemed like I had more to say, but now I have no idea. I'm so freakin' tired, and my neck and shoulders hurt from ceiling painting. Next time I check out a ceiling in a cathedral, I'll be wayyy more respectful. Shit, I can't keep my eyes open as I'm reading this. Bedtime.. I'll check the spelling and grammar tomorrow, so don't eat me alive, Arielle.
